Claudio Fiocchi

Claudio Fiocchi is a Professor in the Department of Molecular Medicine and the Department of Inflammation and Immunity at the School of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University. He is also a Member of the Immune Oncology Program at the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Research Interests: His work focuses on the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), specifically investigating immune mechanisms in gut inflammation, T-cell survival and tolerance, interactions between immune cells and stromal components, and immune-driven angiogenesis. Recent advancements include the development of intestinal epithelial organoid models to study luminal influences on epithelial differentiation.

Publications: Over 150 publications, with recent trends emphasizing fibrosis mechanisms in IBD, multi-omics approaches, environmental triggers, and therapeutic innovation. Key areas include MFGE8's role in fibrosis inhibition, single-cell RNA sequencing of Crohn's disease fibroblasts, and anti-IL-6R antibody trials.

Grants & Labs: Research supported by NIH/NIDDK grants. Leads a lab studying mucosal immunology, epithelial cell dynamics, and translational IBD therapies. Collaborates with the Lerner Research Institute (Cleveland Clinic) and the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center.
