Philipp-Alexander Neumann is an Associate Professor and Principal Investigator at the Department of Surgery, Technical University of Munich (TUM). He holds the Albrecht Struppler Clinician Scientist Fellowship (2022) and is affiliated with the University Hospital Rechts der Isar. His clinical expertise includes colorectal surgery, with a focus on inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and perioperative immune responses. His research explores intestinal inflammation, anastomotic healing, and fibrosis resolution, particularly in Crohn’s disease. Key projects include nanoparticle-based therapies to enhance wound healing during inflammation and the role of Wnt signaling pathways in fibrosis.
Education:
- Medical Degree (2003–2008): Semmelweis University Budapest and Ruprecht-Karls University Heidelberg
- Postdoctoral Fellowship (2011–2013): Emory University, Atlanta, studying mucosal inflammation under Prof. Asma Nusrat
Research Interests: Colorectal surgery, IBD, intestinal inflammation, anastomotic healing, Wnt signaling, fibrosis, and perioperative immune response. Collaborations include Prof. Asma Nusrat (University of Michigan) and Prof. Nazila Kamaly (Technical University of Copenhagen).
Publications: Over 40 peer-reviewed articles, including seminal work on Annexin A1’s role in epithelial repair and IL-10-mediated mucosal regeneration. Recent 2024 studies focus on Wnt signaling targeting in Crohn’s fibrosis and serosal contributions to anastomotic healing.
Awards: Member of the German Surgical Chairs Academy (2018), Travel Grants (VBC/DGAV, 2020/2022), and the 2017 ‘Most Innovative Paper’ Award in Endoscopy.
Labs/Teams: Leads the MITI research group at TUM, focusing on translational research in intestinal wound healing and fibrosis. Collaborates with the Pancreas Center and Transplantation Center at Klinikum rechts der Isar.
