Terhi Heino is an Adjunct Professor (Docent) and University Lecturer in Cell Biology at the Institute of Biomedicine, University of Turku, Finland. She holds dual roles in teaching and research within the Faculty of Medicine. Her research focuses on mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs), bone and vascular biology, biomaterials, and translational regenerative medicine applications. She has a PhD in Cell Biology (2005, University of Turku) and postdoctoral training at the Karolinska Institutet (Sweden). She became a Docent in Cell Biology in 2013. Her teaching spans histology, cell biology, pharmacology, and regenerative medicine at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with international experience in Sweden and EU-funded interdisciplinary projects.
- Education:
- PhD in Cell Biology, University of Turku (2005)
- Postdoctoral Training, Karolinska Institutet (Sweden), 2006–2007
- Docent Title in Cell Biology, University of Turku (2013)
- Pedagogic Qualification, Faculty of Education, University of Turku (2009–2014)
- Research Interests: Stem cell biology, biomaterial-cell interactions, osteogenesis, angiogenesis, bioactive materials, and translational regenerative medicine applications.
Her research group investigates MSC differentiation pathways, bioactive materials for bone healing, and immunomodulatory effects of biomaterials. Recent studies include bioactive glass effects on macrophages and Rcor2 regulation in MSC differentiation. Teaching contributions include curriculum development, mentorship in biomedical programs, and international entrepreneurship education projects. She actively collaborates with multidisciplinary teams in Finland and Sweden.
Publications highlight advancements in biomaterial characterization, molecular mechanisms in bone healing, and interdisciplinary approaches to musculoskeletal research. No scientific awards explicitly mentioned, though her work reflects sustained academic contributions.
