Teija Kujala is a Professor at the Department of Psychology, University of Helsinki, and leads the Centre of Excellence for Music, Mind, Body and Brain Research (MMBB). She is affiliated with the Cognitive Brain Research Unit (CBRU) and actively supervises doctoral programs in Human Behavior, Brain & Mind, and Cognition, Learning, Teaching and Communication.
- Research Focus: Neural mechanisms of speech and music processing, dyslexia risk detection in infants, auditory novelty detection, and the role of music in cognitive development.
- Awards: Recipient of the 2007 Philips Nordic Prize for research on neurodevelopmental disorders.
- Projects: Leads MMBB (2024-2026), contributed to EEG infrastructure grants, and participated in the CoPErNicus project connecting psychology and neuroscience in education.
- Activities: Member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters (2024-present), Academia Europaea (2023-present), and Aalto University's committees.
Her research demonstrates expertise in developmental neuroscience, particularly in auditory processing and language acquisition, with translational applications for early dyslexia intervention. She combines electrophysiological methods (EEG, ERP) with longitudinal and cross-disciplinary approaches, including collaborations in music cognition and educational psychology.
Scientific Contributions: Key findings include the early detection of dyslexia risk through infant neural responses and the potential of musical interventions to support language development. Her work emphasizes practical applications in medical and educational contexts.
