Taylor Barnett is an Assistant Professor of Music at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), specializing in jazz trumpet performance, composition, and education. He serves as Director of Jazz Studies and teaches courses in jazz arranging, history, pedagogy, and interdisciplinary computing-music applications.
- B.M. and M.M. in Jazz Studies and Trumpet Performance from VCU
- D.M.A. in Performance, Pedagogy, and Literature from James Madison University
His research bridges jazz performance with computer science through the NSF-funded Code Beats project, which uses hip-hop beat creation to teach programming fundamentals. As a performer, he has appeared at major venues like Monterey Jazz Festival, Lincoln Center, and NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert with artists ranging from Bon Iver to The Temptations.

Dr. Barnett actively performs with No BS! Brass, leads his own jazz groups, and contributes to youth music education as a clinician and adjudicator. His work in large-ensemble arranging has reached international audiences across four continents.
