Erik Mahon is an Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Jazz Studies at Morningside University. He oversees the jazz ensemble 'M Avenue,' teaches trumpet, coordinates brass chamber activities, and instructs in music courses. His leadership includes organizing the region's premier jazz festival (49th year in 2022) and creating Middle School Jazz Day. Mahon holds a D.M.A. from the University of Kansas, M.M. from the University of South Dakota, and B.M. from Gustavus Adolphus College.
As a performer, Mahon has toured internationally, appearing at Montreux (Switzerland), Vienne (France), Umbria (Italy) jazz festivals, and venues like The Kennedy Center. He plays lead trumpet for Jazzed Up! Big Band and the award-winning band Goodroad, collaborating with notable artists like The Temptations and performing at Arnold's Park.
Mahon is active in music education, serving on committees for Iowa Bandmasters Association and Jazz Educators of Iowa. His performances blend classical, jazz, and commercial traditions, reflecting his versatility as a musician and educator.
