Tarek Shamma is a Professor in the Translation Research and Instruction Program (TRIP) and Comparative Literature at Binghamton University, serving as both Graduate and Undergraduate Director. He previously taught at universities in Syria, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar. His research focuses on translation studies, cultural representation, and Arabic literature. He holds a PhD and MA from Binghamton University, and a BA from Tishreen University in Syria.
Shamma’s work includes the 2009 book Translation and the Manipulation of Difference: Arabic Literature in Nineteenth-Century England and the 2022 anthology Anthology of Arabic Discourse on Translation. He has contributed to the Routledge Handbook of Translation History (2021) and World Literature: Premises and Problems (2021). His awards include a QNRF grant (2015–2019), a Harpur College Subvention Award (2019–2020), and an IASH Fellowship (2021).
His research spans translation’s cultural impact, postcolonial studies, and Arabic literary traditions. He leads projects on classical Arabic translation discourse and the intersection of literature and identity. His work bridges pre-modern and modern textual analysis, emphasizing cross-cultural exchanges.
