Dr. James Al-Shamma is an Associate Professor of Theatre at Belmont University’s College of Music & Performing Arts. He holds a Ph.D. in Dramatic Art, an M.A. in Dramatic Art with a Directing Emphasis, and a B.F.A. in Theatre/Acting from the University of California-Santa Barbara. At Belmont, he teaches courses in theatre history, literature, scriptwriting, improvisation, and an honors course on Middle Eastern Culture and Arts.
Dr. Al-Shamma’s research focuses on contemporary women playwrights and Arabic, particularly Iraqi, theatre. He has directed numerous productions at Belmont, including The Cripple of Inishmaan, Our Town, and As Bees in Honey Drown, as well as for Verge Theatre, a resident company providing students professional collaboration opportunities.
His publications include two books on Sarah Ruhl, articles in the Journal of Dramatic Theory and Criticism and The Eugene O’Neill Review, and co-editorship of Contemporary Plays from Iraq, an anthology introducing nine Iraqi works to English audiences.
Dr. Al-Shamma has also taught at Texas A&M University-Commerce, directing A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
