Dr. Daniel Schafer is Professor of History in the Department of History, College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences at Belmont University. He has been a faculty member since 1996 and previously taught at Truman State University in Missouri. His academic work centers on the history of non-Russian Muslim nationalities in the Russian and Soviet empires, with a focus on the Tatars and Bashkirs of the Volga-Ural region.

Dr. Schafer's research explores the cultural, linguistic, and political roles of Muslim communities in Russian and Soviet history. His teaching includes courses on Russian and Soviet history, Islamic intellectual traditions, Central Asian history, environmental history, and historical methodology. He also contributes to undergraduate education through First-Year Seminars and Linked Cohort programs.
