Tarek El-Ariss is the James Wright Professor and Chair of Middle Eastern Studies at Dartmouth College. A 2021 Guggenheim Fellow, he works across philosophy, literature, and digital studies to examine Arab modernity, trauma, and cultural production.
His research analyzes Arabic literature from the Nahda to contemporary digital activism, exploring how scandals, leaks, and new media reshape political expression. Recent work includes the memoir Water on Fire about Lebanon's civil war.
El-Ariss edited the MLA anthology The Arab Renaissance and authored award-winning books including Leaks, Hacks, and Scandals. He lectures globally on digital culture and has held residencies at Berlin's Haus der Kulturen der Welt.
