Tara Sutherland is an Honorary Lecturer (Teaching & Research) at the University of Manchester's Division of Immunology, Immunity to Infection and Respiratory Medicine. Her research focuses on the interplay between immune responses, stromal cells, and the extracellular matrix (ECM) in lung diseases such as asthma, fibrosis, and COVID-19. She leads a multidisciplinary team investigating ECM remodeling and tissue repair mechanisms, aligning with the Lydia Becker Institute of Immunology and Inflammation and the Wellcome Centre for Cell Matrix Research.
Education: BSc and PhD, with early career training in pharmacology/drug design. Moved from Australia to the UK in 2007, becoming a Research Fellow at Manchester in 2016.
Research interests include:
- ECM-Immune cell interactions
- Lung fibrosis mechanisms
- Type 2 immunity in parasitic infections
- Role of IL-13 in hyaluronan regulation
Recent articles highlight advancements in CRISPR mouse models, microRNA sequencing for fibrosis detection, and ECM phenotyping in allergic inflammation. Her work contributes to UN SDGs addressing health and environmental sustainability.
- Supervised 3 students including Hannah Tompkins (Wellcome Trust PhD) and James Parkinson (PhD)
- Awarded Poster Prize (2016)
- Active in professional organizations: British Society for Immunology, British Association for Lung Research
Labs/Teams: Leads a lab investigating ECM dynamics in lung diseases, collaborating internationally on parasitic infection studies.
