Judi Allen

Judi Allen is a Professor of Immunology at the University of Manchester, part of the Faculty of Life Sciences and the Division of Immunology, Immunity to Infection and Respiratory Medicine. Her research focuses on host immune responses to parasitic infections, particularly type 2 immunity against helminths. She holds honorary roles at the University of Edinburgh and is affiliated with the Lydia Becker Institute. Allen has a B.Sc. from Bates College and a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley, followed by postdoctoral work at Imperial College London. She leads a lab investigating macrophage activation, wound repair pathways, and co-infection challenges. Her work is funded by the Medical Research Council and Wellcome Trust.

Research Interests: Her lab explores type 2 immune responses to helminths, macrophage activation in infection, and interactions between immunity and wound repair. Key projects include understanding anti-helminth immunity mechanisms and its overlap with tissue repair processes.

Recent Articles: Recent studies highlight CRISPR-generated mouse models for immunological research, T cell regulation of macrophage differentiation, and γδ T cell roles in lung immunity during parasitic infections. These studies underscore her lab's focus on translational immunology and host-pathogen interactions.

Awards: Allen’s honors include Fellowships from the Royal Society (2023), Academy of Medical Sciences (2016), Royal Society of Edinburgh (2014), and Royal Society of Biology (2013), along with EMBO membership (2018).

Lab & Grants: Current projects include studies on surgical adhesion mechanisms (with Dominik Rückerl) and kidney organoid models. Her lab collaborates internationally and has produced over 159 publications. Supervised students include Brian Chan, James Parkinson, and Mariana Suárez.
