Richard Grencis

Richard Grencis is a Professor of Immunology at the University of Manchester's School of Biological Sciences, within the Division of Immunology, Immunity to Infection and Respiratory Medicine. His career includes a BSc in Zoology from the University of Nottingham (1979), a PhD in Parasitology from the University of Glasgow (under Derek Wakelin), and postdoctoral research at the MRC Experimental Parasitology Group. He has held roles from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer, Reader, and ultimately Professor of Immunology since 1998.

His research focuses on immunity to gastrointestinal nematode parasites, particularly mechanisms governing host resistance/susceptibility, cytokine regulation, and parasite modulation of immune responses. Key areas include T lymphocyte roles, microflora interactions, and vaccine development. Collaborations include work with the Sanger Centre on whipworm genomics.

Recent studies (2023–2025) highlight fibrosis in Trichuris muris infections, metabolic models of whipworms, and diet-induced immunity changes. His work aligns with UN SDGs for health and sustainable development through contributions to neglected tropical disease research and public health initiatives.
