Tansy Spinks

Dr. Tansy Spinks is a Senior Lecturer in Printmaking/Photography at Middlesex University's School of Arts within the Faculty of Arts and Creative Industries. She teaches part-time (0.6 FTE) across BA Fine Art and MA programs, having previously served as Programme Leader for MA Fine Art (2016-2022). Her academic background includes extensive experience at Middlesex University since 1986.

Her research explores interdisciplinary intersections of sound, performance, and visual media. Key interests include live improvisation strategies, site-specific sound art, graphic notation systems, collaborative film sound, and materiality in artistic practice. She investigates how everyday objects transform through multimedia expressions across drawing, photography, video, and performance.

Recent research outputs demonstrate strong engagement with experimental performance practices and collaborative sound projects, particularly focusing on spatial acoustics, improvisational methodologies, and cross-media interpretations of visual scores.

She actively supervises doctoral researchers working on diverse topics including feminist disruption in sculpture, silence in acoustic ecology, unconscious processes in drawing, time perception in film, and immersive VR art experiences.

Collaborative projects include the Lab of Sonic Possibility and partnerships with international artists exploring instrument innovation and site-responsive performances.
