Tanja Vahtikari is a University Lecturer and Head of the Degree Programme in History at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Tampere University. Her research focuses on urban history, cultural heritage, and the history of emotions, particularly in Finnish and transnational contexts. She leads the research project Tampere University Baby Box as an Emotional Object, exploring welfare state narratives through material culture.
She holds leadership roles in scholarly organizations, including Board Member of the European Association for Urban History, long-term Board Member of the Finnish Society for Urban Studies, and member of ICOMOS Finland’s World Heritage Group. Her work bridges urban studies, heritage policy, and historical methodologies.
Research interests span urban museums, historical reenactment, and the sociomaterial dimensions of heritage. She co-edited Lived Nation: Histories of Experiences and Emotions in Finland (2021) and authored Valuing World Heritage Cities (2017). Her recent articles analyze post-war urban pageants, photographic methods in history, and transnational urban networks.
She is affiliated with the Academy of Finland Center of Excellence in the History of Experiences and contributes to interdisciplinary urban research through collaborations like Humanistinen kaupunkitutkimus. Her work emphasizes participatory heritage practices and the emotional dimensions of urban spaces.
