Laura Uimonen is a University Instructor and Postdoctoral Researcher in Urban Planning at Tampere University’s Faculty of Built Environment. Her work focuses on integrating biodiversity, art, and sustainability into urban environments. She completed her doctorate at Aalto University’s Department of Art with a thesis exploring art-based projects in Finnish urban planning. Her research bridges ecological and cultural dimensions, emphasizing indicators for sustainable residential areas and urban biodiversity.
Key projects include contributing to the Dead wood as an indicator of urban biodiversity chapter in the influential Towards more sustainable residential areas book (2024) and co-authoring studies on urban microbiota influenced by deadwood and rewilding. She has been funded by Finland’s Academy of Finland through initiatives like Enabling multispecies transitions and Biodiversity interventions for well-being.
Her research interests span urban ecology, sustainable design, and the role of art in planning processes. Awards include the 2020 SKR Finnish Cultural Foundation recognition for Arkkitehdin luontotieto. She advises on projects linking urban green spaces to public health and collaborates across disciplines to advance ecological and cultural sustainability goals.
