Tanja Michalsky is an art historian and director at the Bibliotheca Hertziana - Max Planck Institute for Art History in Rome since 2014. Previously, she held professorships at the University of the Arts Berlin (2007–2015) and Goethe University Frankfurt (2001–2002, 2005–2007). Her research focuses on historical space construction, cartography, and visual epistemology, particularly in southern Italy and early modern Dutch landscapes.

Her work bridges art history, geography, and media theory, analyzing tomb iconography, urbanism, and film as spatial discourse. Publications include studies on Neapolitan baroque art, medieval cartography, and David Lynch's cinematic media theory.
