Tanja Aalberts is a Full Professor of Law and Security at the Faculty of Law, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. She holds additional roles as Full Professor at the Kooijmans Institute and the Boundaries of Law research program. With a PhD in Political Science (cum laude), her work bridges international law and global governance, focusing on security, sovereignty, and the interplay between politics and legal frameworks. She is a founding member of the European International Studies Association and serves as editor for the Routledge 'Politics of Transnational Law' book series and the Leiden Journal of International Law.
Education: PhD in Political Science (cum laude), Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
Research Interests: Global governance, international law and relations, security studies, legal theory, political sociology, and transnational legal practices. Her work critically examines how legal and political dynamics shape contemporary governance, particularly in security contexts and transnational institutions.
Publications: Recent works include The Power of Legality (2016) and Changing Practices of International Law (2018), alongside contributions to leading journals like the London Review of International Law and Critical Studies on Security. Her research explores themes such as sovereignty, discourse analysis, and the material culture of legal institutions.
Activities: Editorial roles, membership in academic associations, and consultancy for the Swedish Research Council. She also advises on international affairs through her role at Adviesraad Internationale Vraagstukken (The Hague, 2023–present).
Labs/Teams: Active in interdisciplinary legal research networks, including collaborations on transnational law and international political sociology.
