Jessie Stam serves as a Lecturer in the Department of Criminal Law at the Faculty of Law, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and is affiliated with the Kooijmans Institute for Empirical and Normative Legal Studies. Her teaching responsibilities encompass criminal law, criminal procedure, and sanctions law.
Her academic journey includes:
- Bachelor of Criminology and Bachelor of Law from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam
- Master of Criminal Law (cum laude) from Radboud University
- Master of Legal Research (cum laude) from University of Groningen
Stam's research centers on criminal justice policy, with emphasis on youth compliance mechanisms, tobacco control legislation, and habitual offender sentencing. She employs interdisciplinary methodologies combining legal analysis with empirical social science to evaluate the effectiveness and normative foundations of criminal law interventions.
Her 2024 publications demonstrate a consistent focus on regulatory enforcement and sentencing policy. The study on youth compliance with smoking bans explores behavioral responses to public health regulations, while the analysis of three-strikes policies examines the transferability of U.S. sentencing frameworks to the Dutch legal context. These works reflect her broader interest in evidence-based criminal justice reform.
Currently advancing her PhD research at VU's Criminal Law department, Stam contributes to the Kooijmans Institute's mission of integrating empirical and theoretical perspectives in legal scholarship. No information is available regarding student supervision or research grants.
