Janneke Franken is a Lecturer in Criminal Law at the Faculty of Law, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, with affiliations to the Kooijmans Institute and Empirical and Normative Studies. Her research focuses on extrajudicial settlements in juvenile criminal law, examining their alignment with the rights of youth offenders, victims, and societal interests. Methodologically, her work integrates legal-theoretical analysis, qualitative empirical research (interviews and observations), and comparative law studies.
She teaches courses such as 'Jeugd en Strafrecht' (Juvenile and Criminal Law) and coordinates the master's program in this field. Additionally, she instructs 'Strafrechtelijk ingrijpen vanuit juridisch en pedagogisch perspectief' (Criminal Law Intervention from Legal and Pedagogical Perspectives) and supervises student papers and theses.
Janneke holds ancillary roles as an author at Wolters Kluwer Nederland B.V. since June 2024. Her recent publication (2022) explores children's rights perspectives on education during the Dutch pandemic crisis, reflecting her interdisciplinary engagement with legal, educational, and societal challenges.
