Lonneke Stevens is a Visiting Fellow at the Faculty of Law of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, affiliated with the Kooijmans Institute and Empirical and Normative Studies. She concurrently serves as a staff member at the Dutch National Police (Politie Nederland). Her academic journey includes a cum laude Law degree from Maastricht University (2005 PhD, Tilburg University) and roles as a criminal lawyer, university lecturer, and full professor of Criminal and Criminal Procedure Law at VU Amsterdam (2016–2024).
Her research focuses on digital-era criminal procedure, emphasizing evidence standards, police surveillance norms, and data protection challenges. Key themes include oversight mechanisms for digital investigations, legal frameworks for facial recognition technology, and Bayesian reasoning in judicial decision-making. She has contributed to over 60 publications and actively engages in public lectures on topics like judicial truth-finding and legal accountability.
Stevens has advised three PhD candidates and teaches specialized courses on criminal law and procedure. Her work bridges legal theory and practice, addressing modern challenges such as data-driven policing and procedural justice in the digital age.
