Dr. Tamer Kamel is a Lecturer in Power Electronics and Renewable Energy at the School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics, University of Plymouth. He leads projects on renewable energy integration, electrified transport, and maritime decarbonization. His academic roles include Module Lead for Power Electronics and Generation, Design and Control of Renewable Energy Technology, and Electronics/Robotics courses. He oversees MSc programmes in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Robotics.
Dr. Kamel holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Power Engineering from the University of New Brunswick (2015). His research focuses on fault diagnosis in power electronics, smart grid implementations, AI applications in electrical systems, and control strategies for renewable energy integration. He supervises PhD/MSc students on topics such as microgrid planning, cyber-resilience of wind plants, and optimal design of hybrid renewable systems.
His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in affordable clean energy (SDG7) and climate action (SDG13). Key research contributions include smart grid-railway synergy, medium-voltage DC railway systems, and energy storage optimization. He is a member of IEEE and IMarEST, and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Dr. Kamel’s publications emphasize advanced control algorithms for DC railway systems, soft open point technologies, and energy efficiency improvements in interconnected grids. His research themes include embedded control systems and predictive fault diagnostics, reflecting his dual focus on theoretical innovation and practical industrial applications.
