Takis Poulakos is an Associate Professor at the University of Iowa, specializing in classical rhetoric and the history of rhetorical theory. He teaches courses in first-year rhetoric, classical rhetoric, and the rhetoric of the 1960s, as well as graduate-level studies in rhetorical education. His academic affiliations include the Department of Rhetoric and Persuasion programs within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Education: PhD from Miami University.
Research interests focus on ancient Greek rhetorical practices, particularly those of Isocrates, and their implications for modern rhetorical theory. He has authored or co-authored influential works such as Speaking for the Polis: Isocrates' Rhetorical Education and edited volumes like Rethinking the History of Rhetoric. His scholarship has earned him leadership roles, including serving as President of the American Society for the History of Rhetoric, and numerous grants and awards for his contributions to classical rhetoric studies.
