Tahir Hussain is a Professor of Pharmacology and the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs at the University of Houston College of Pharmacy. He serves as Director of the Heart & Kidney Institute, focusing on angiotensin receptor signaling in metabolic disorders, inflammation, and renal protection.
His research explores the molecular mechanisms of the angiotensin type 2 receptor (AT2R) in mitigating kidney damage, hypertension, and obesity-related inflammation through nitric oxide and phosphatase pathways. Recent work highlights AT2R agonism in renal ischemia, Treg cell induction, and lipid metabolism regulation.
Key publications include 2021 studies on AT2R activation in renal ischemia and inflammation, 2019 findings on lipid metabolism and immune infiltration, and 2017 investigations into AT2R-Mas receptor interactions in obesity. Themes span GPCR signaling, metabolic disorders, and immunomodulation.
- Mario Toppo Distinguished Scientist Award (2023)
- Fellow of American Society of Nephrology (2022–present)
- Joseph P. and Shirley Shipman Buckley Endowed Professor (2018–present)
He directs the Heart & Kidney Institute, leveraging collaborative grants and interdisciplinary research to advance renin-angiotensin system therapies for organ protection.
