Tian Yang is a Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Utah School of Medicine since July 2009 and holds an adjunct appointment as Professor in Nutrition & Integrative Physiology since September 2017. His academic career includes prior roles as Research Associate Professor (2003-2004), Associate Professor (2005-2009), and adjunct positions in Physiology (2004-2013). He teaches doctoral-level courses including Dissertation and Independent Studies, mentoring advanced graduate students.
His research focuses on renal physiology, cardiovascular mechanisms, and hormonal regulation, with emphasis on the renin-angiotensin system, aldosterone signaling pathways, and circadian rhythms in blood pressure. Key projects include investigating renin receptor functions, adipose-derived hormone influences on electrolyte balance, and prostaglandin E2 interactions with renal systems.
Dr. Yang has secured extensive funding through NIH grants (e.g., PGE2 & Intrarenal RAS, Prorenin in Aldosterone) and VA collaborations, managing 48 grants from 2015-2025. He supervises multiple trainees via VA IPA programs and American Heart Association fellowships, mentoring researchers like CHUANMING XU, RENFEI LUO, and YANTING C. His work involves collaborations with VA Salt Lake City Healthcare and interdisciplinary teams across physiology and internal medicine.
- Grants: 25+ active grants (2023-2026) focusing on renal mechanisms and cardiovascular health
- Labs/Teams: Leads VA/NIH-funded research groups investigating hormone-kidney interactions
