Professor T.J. Tomlin is a faculty member in the Department of History at the University of Northern Colorado (UNC), part of the College of Humanities & Social Sciences. He holds a B.A. in History from Kansas State University, an M.A. in Church History from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. in History from the University of Missouri. His research focuses on the intersection of religion and American culture, particularly in the eighteenth century. Current projects include a history of chance in early America. He teaches courses such as Early America to 1763, Revolutionary America, Religion in American History, and a capstone seminar on print history. Tomlin has received fellowships from prominent institutions, including the American Antiquarian Society and the Library Company of Philadelphia. His 2014 book, A Divinity for All Persuasions, explores almanacs and religious life in early America. He is currently on sabbatical for the Spring semester of 2025.
Professional awards include fellowships from the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and the Virginia Historical Society. His work bridges historical scholarship with cultural analysis, emphasizing the role of religious practices and material culture in shaping early American society.
