Michael Breidenbach, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of History at Ave Maria University and a Senior Affiliate for Legal Humanities at the University of Pennsylvania’s Program for Research on Religion and Urban Civil Society. His research focuses on American politics, religion, law, and culture, with particular emphasis on religious toleration in early America and First Amendment jurisprudence. He earned a B.A. in History and American Studies from Northwestern University, an M.Phil. in Political Thought and Intellectual History from the University of Cambridge, and a Ph.D. in History from King’s College, Cambridge.
Dr. Breidenbach’s major works include Our Dear-Bought Liberty: Catholics and Religious Toleration in Early America (Harvard UP, 2021) and co-editing The Cambridge Companion to the First Amendment and Religious Liberty (Cambridge UP, 2020). His writing has appeared in The Atlantic, Washington Post, and First Things. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in 2022.
His research has been supported by fellowships at institutions such as Princeton University, Oxford’s Rothermere American Institute, and the McNeil Center for Early American Studies. Current projects explore the politics of naming in Revolutionary America and nineteenth-century American Catholicism.
Dr. Breidenbach’s teaching spans American history, political thought, and legal history. He emphasizes interdisciplinary methods, public speaking, and archival research. His work bridges historical scholarship with contemporary debates on religious liberty and constitutional law.
