Stephen Marini is the Elisabeth Luce Moore Professor of Christian Studies and Professor of Religious Studies at Wellesley College. Holding a Ph.D. from Harvard University, he specializes in religion in America during the Colonial, Revolutionary, and Early National periods, with a particular focus on sacred music and poetry.
His research spans transatlantic religious and musical transmission, early American cultural history, and interdisciplinary approaches to religion in American literature, law, and politics. He founded the Norumbega Harmony singing group in 1976 to explore Early American sacred music traditions.
Marini has received seven major research fellowships, including from the NEH, ACLS, and Lilly Endowment. His 2020 book The Cashaway Psalmody examines the earliest surviving sacred music from colonial Carolina, complemented by chapters in UK and US collections on transatlantic musical and literary traditions.
