Sándor Papp is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Hungary, where he is affiliated with the Department of Early Modern, Economic, and Educational History. His academic work is deeply rooted in Ottoman-Hungarian relations and early modern Central European history.

His research centers on early modern history, especially Ottoman-Hungarian relations, the history of Christian vassal states (Transylvania, Moldavia, Wallachia), and Rákóczi’s War of Independence. He also explores Habsburg diplomacy, Ottoman archival sources, and the socio-political dynamics of the Ottoman frontier. His publications span monographs, edited volumes, and numerous scholarly articles.
The analysis of his recent publications reveals a consistent focus on Ottoman diplomatic history, particularly during the 16th–18th centuries. His work explores treaties, embassy practices, and the political roles of Transylvania and other vassal regions. He frequently draws on Ottoman archival material to reinterpret Hungarian and Central European history, with recurring themes of exile, autonomy, and inter-imperial diplomacy.

Sándor Papp has promoted several doctoral students, including Hadnagy Szabolcs and Cziráki Zsuzsanna. He served as an opponent in PhD defenses at ELTE and DE. He was a Humboldt Fellow at Heidelberg University (2005–2007) and held a Mellon Research Fellowship in Turkey (2004), reflecting his strong international scholarly presence. He has organized major conferences such as Europe and Hungary in the Age of Ferenc II Rákóczi (2003) and In the Eyes of the Neighbours (2009).

He leads and participates in multiple research groups, including the Ottoman Era Research Group at Szeged University and the Protestantism and Transylvania Research Group at Károli Gáspár University.
