Zoltan Szekanecz is a Full Professor and Chairman of the Department of Rheumatology at the University of Debrecen, Hungary (full-time since 2008). He has held academic roles since 1990, progressing from Resident to Assistant Professor (1998–2000), Associate Professor (2000–2008), and Full Professor. He served as Vice-Dean of the Medical Faculty (2013–2018) and held leadership roles in international organizations like EULAR (European League Against Rheumatism), including General Secretary since 2019.
Education: Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (2001), Doctor Habilis (2000), Ph.D. (1995). Completed postdoctoral training at the University of Manchester (UK) and research stints at Northwestern University (USA).
Research focuses on synovial inflammation, cell adhesion mechanisms, genetic factors in rheumatic diseases, targeted therapies, and comorbidities like cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis. He investigates secondary complications such as bone loss and cancer in rheumatic patients, exploring intersections between atherosclerosis and osteoporosis.
Awardees of notable honors include the Issekutz Award (2019), Szentágothai National Excellence Award (2013), and leadership in Hungarian medical societies. His institutional roles include jury membership in the Hungarian Scientific Research Fund (OTKA) and positions in the Medical Sciences Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
Publications: 448 original articles (H-index 65, citations ~15,000), 12 books, and 87 book chapters. Active in academic governance, including University Senate membership (2010–2013) and international affairs leadership.
