Sylvia Shaw is a Senior Lecturer in English Language and Linguistics at the University of Westminster, School of Humanities. She serves as Assistant Head of the Graduate School and Doctoral Coordinator for the School of Humanities. A sociolinguist specializing in language and gender, her research focuses on political contexts, including analyses of televised debates, parliamentary discourse, and gendered communication patterns among political leaders like Theresa May and Julia Gillard.
- BA (Hons) English, MA Applied Linguistics and TESOL, PhD in Linguistics from Institute of Education, University of London (2002)
- Former Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader at Middlesex University (2006-2014)

Her research explores gender dynamics in political institutions, including the House of Commons, Scottish Parliament, and Northern Ireland Assembly. She was Principal Investigator for ESRC-funded projects on gender and language in UK devolved institutions (2009-11) and has published extensively on mediatised political discourse, including monograph Women, Language and Politics (2020, Cambridge University Press).
Recent publications analyze Theresa May's language in Prime Minister's Question Time and debate floor apportionment in 2024 Harris vs Trump presidential debates. Her work spans sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, gender studies, and political communication. She has supervised numerous PhD projects and served as external examiner at multiple UK universities.
