Sylvia Bawa is an Associate Professor of Sociology at York University and Director of the Resource Centre for Public Sociology. Her research examines globalization, human rights, and postcolonial development, with emphasis on women's rights mobilization and Afrofuturism.
She leads SSHRC-funded international collaborations including CARRISSA (Canada's Human Rights Role in Sub-Saharan Africa) and networks on the African Human Rights Action Plan. Publications appear in Third World Quarterly and Palgrave Handbooks, analyzing paradoxes of empowerment and cultural rights in African contexts.
Educational background includes a PhD from Queen's University and BA (First Class Honours) from University of Ghana. She serves on editorial boards for Contemporary Journal of African Studies and Studies in Social Justice.
