Dr Sylvain Ladame is a Reader in Biosensor Development at Imperial College London's Department of Bioengineering, part of the Faculty of Engineering. He leads the Ladame Group, focusing on nucleic acid sensing and biomedical engineering. His affiliations include the CRUK Convergence Science Centre, Cancer Technology Network, and multiple Imperial College research initiatives.
Education: PhD in Chemistry from the University of Toulouse (2001), postdoctoral work at the University of Cambridge (2001–2006), and prior leadership roles at CNRS/University of Strasbourg. His research integrates chemical engineering principles to develop diagnostic tools for nucleic acid biomarkers, targeting applications like preterm birth prediction and cancer biomarker identification.
Research interests include nucleic acid ligand engineering, fluorosensors, and G-quadruplex structures, with a focus on in vivo sensing and therapeutic target discovery. His lab innovates in hydrogel microneedles, lateral flow assays, and electrochemical sensors for point-of-care diagnostics.
Notable projects include microRNA biomarker detection for scleroderma and preterm birth, as well as size-based analysis of cell-free DNA for oncology. His work bridges molecular recognition and bioengineering, with applications in both clinical diagnostics and fundamental biology.
