Dr. Sylvain Charbonnier is Associate Professor of Volcanology at the University of South Florida. Specializing in pyroclastic flow dynamics, he conducts field-based and computational research on volcanic hazards at active volcanoes globally, including Merapi (Indonesia), Fuego (Guatemala), and La Soufrière (St. Vincent).
His work integrates drone mapping, sedimentology, and numerical modeling (e.g., Titan2D) to reconstruct eruption mechanisms and improve hazard forecasting. Recent publications analyze the 2018 Fuego disaster and develop open-source tools for model validation.
Charbonnier leads international collaborations through the VHub cyberinfrastructure and advises graduate students on volcanic risk projects. He teaches physical volcanology and advocates for open data practices in geosciences.
