Dr. Paul Cole serves as Associate Professor of Volcanology at the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Plymouth, a position held since 2017 after progressing from Lecturer in Geohazards (2013-2017). His extensive career includes Directorship of the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (2009-2012), Senior Lecturer in Natural Hazards at Coventry University (2002-2009), and academic roles at University of Luton (1995-2002). Early research involved postdoctoral work on Furnas volcano (Azores) and Campi Flegrei caldera systems.
Professor Cole's research centers on volcanic hazard assessment through physical volcanology, sedimentology, and numerical modeling. Key interests include pyroclastic density currents, lahars, debris avalanches, and eruption dynamics across global sites including Montserrat, St. Vincent, Campi Flegrei (Italy), and the Canary Islands. His methodology integrates field studies with community-based monitoring to address societal vulnerability and risk reduction, particularly regarding cascading hazards and low-magnitude eruption impacts.
Recent publications (2022-2025) demonstrate intense focus on the 2021 La Soufrière eruption on St. Vincent, covering eruption source parameters, pyroclastic current modeling, and lahar impacts. Significant work also addresses ancient volcanic systems in Campi Flegrei and debris avalanche mechanics in the Canary Islands, revealing consistent themes of hazard quantification, societal resilience, and multi-hazard interactions.
Dr. Cole actively supervises PhD candidates including Amy Peach (St. Kitts/Nevis volcanism) and Symeon Makris (landslide propagation), with 10 completed doctorates. His teaching encompasses module leadership for Igneous Processes and Advanced Fieldwork courses, plus contributions to Earth Materials and Petrology instruction. As former Earth Sciences Programme Lead (2016-2020), he shapes curriculum development while advancing UN Sustainable Development Goals through volcanic risk research.
