Sylva Kathy

Kathy Sylva is an Honorary Research Fellow and Professor Emeritus at the University of Oxford's Department of Education, affiliated with Jesus College. She holds a PhD in Developmental Psychology from Harvard University. Her career includes roles as Professor of Educational Psychology at Oxford (1997–2015), Professor of Child Development at the University of London (1990–1996), and University Lecturer at the University of Oxford (1977–1988). She has advised institutions like Ofsted and the Education Endowment Foundation.

Her research focuses on early childhood development, pre-school interventions, and the interplay between families, schools, and institutions. Key interests include cognitive development, educational disadvantage, and policy impacts. She has led large-scale studies like the Effective Pre-school and Primary Education Project (EPPE), examining long-term effects of early education.

Sylva has received prestigious awards, including the Nisbett Award (2014), OBE (2008), and Honorary Doctorates from multiple universities. Her work emphasizes improving outcomes for disadvantaged children through evidence-based policies and interventions. She has contributed to national evaluations of Children’s Centres and pioneered research on parenting support programs.
