Kathy Sylva is an Honorary Research Fellow and Professor Emeritus at the University of Oxford's Department of Education, affiliated with Jesus College. She holds a PhD in Developmental Psychology from Harvard University. Her career includes roles as Professor of Educational Psychology at Oxford (1997–2015), Professor of Child Development at the University of London (1990–1996), and University Lecturer at the University of Oxford (1977–1988). She has advised institutions like Ofsted and the Education Endowment Foundation.
Her research focuses on early childhood development, pre-school interventions, and the interplay between families, schools, and institutions. Key interests include cognitive development, educational disadvantage, and policy impacts. Sylva has received prestigious awards, including the Nisbett Award (2014), OBE (2008), and Honorary Doctorates from multiple universities. Her work emphasizes improving outcomes for disadvantaged children through evidence-based policies and interventions. She has contributed to national evaluations of Children’s Centres and pioneered research on parenting support programs.
Her grants include funding from the Department for Education and Sutton Trust for projects like the Early Years Recovery Programme and Coaching Early Conversations (CECIL). She collaborates with international teams to assess early childhood quality frameworks and promote equitable education access.
