Sydney Blair was an Associate Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Virginia’s Department of English, serving as Director of the Creative Writing Program twice (1991–1995 and 2006–2009). She graduated from UVA’s MFA program in 1986 and dedicated over 30 years to teaching, mentoring students, and elevating the program’s national reputation. Her novel Buffalo (1991) won the Virginia Prize for Fiction, and her short story River Song (2015) highlighted her narrative prowess. Blair emphasized creative nonfiction and American literary traditions, fostering a supportive environment for students. She received the Virginia Prize for Fiction and inspired generations of writers.
Her legacy includes the Sydney Hall Blair Award for Excellence in Teaching, established by her family to support female MFA students. Blair’s pedagogy blended rigorous craft instruction with empathy, leaving a lasting impact on UVA’s creative writing community.
