Sybren Slimmen is a lecturer-researcher at HZ University of Applied Sciences, affiliated with the Healthy Region research group. Since 2022, he has been pursuing a PhD at Maastricht University’s Care and Public Health Research Institute, focusing on mental health determinants for young adults using a social-ecological framework.
His academic background includes a Master’s in Health Education and Promotion from Maastricht University (2022) and a Sports Medicine degree from HZ University of Applied Sciences (2017). He combines research with teaching, integrating practical client projects into his curriculum to enhance student engagement.
Key research areas include international health promotion projects such as TICC (optimizing patient autonomy in care) and ENSURE (peer-to-peer social inclusion for vulnerable groups). These projects emphasize cultural context comparisons and sustainable implementation strategies. He also contributes to local initiatives like the ‘Healthy in Zeeland’ program promoting active lifestyles.
Professional experience includes roles as a medical fitness instructor and active involvement in applied research at the Joint Research Center Zeeland. His teaching philosophy emphasizes mentorship and real-world application of research findings.
