Suzanne DeVries-Zimmerman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences at Hope College, where she has taught since 1999. She specializes in coastal dune dynamics, ecohydrology, and environmental assessment.
- M.A. in Geological and Geophysical Sciences, Princeton University (1989)
- B.A. in Geology, Hope College (1986)
- B.S. in Biology, Hope College (1982)
Her research focuses on the interplay between coastal dune geomorphology and ecological systems. Key projects include a long-term ecohydrological study of an interdunal wetland near Saugatuck, Michigan, and international collaborations with Liverpool Hope University and the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology in Wales to analyze dune dynamics along Lake Michigan and Welsh coasts.
Recent trends in her publications highlight expertise in dune sedimentology, climate impact analysis, hydrological modeling, and coastal management. Her work spans field-based geomorphological studies, eolian transport proxies, and interdisciplinary approaches to dune conservation.
- Research grants from National Geographic Society, Michigan Space Grant Consortium, and Howard Hughes Medical Institute
- Coastal Zone Management Grant from Michigan Department of Environmental Quality
- DTE Energy grant for co-mentoring REACH II high school research teams
DeVries-Zimmerman leads the Hope College Dune Research Group, conducting fieldwork in Lake Michigan's coastal dunes while mentoring undergraduate researchers in ecological and geomorphological studies.
