Brian Yurk is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Hope College, where he has taught since 2009. His work bridges mathematics with ecology and geology, focusing on modeling heterogeneous landscapes and environmental systems.
- Ph.D. in Mathematics, Utah State University, 2009
- B.S. in Mathematics and Geology, Hope College, 2003
Research interests: Applying mathematical techniques to ecological and geological challenges, including homogenization methods for population dynamics, drone and satellite imagery analysis, and dune ecosystem modeling. His fieldwork spans the Monteverde cloud forest (Costa Rica) and Lake Michigan dunes.
Grants & Awards:
- Michigan Space Grant (2019) for satellite imagery studies
- Lord Robert May Prize (2017-2018) for best paper in Journal of Biological Dynamics
- American Institute of Mathematics SQuaREs Program grant (2016–18)
Collaborations: Advisor for Hope College’s Pi Mu Epsilon chapter; active member of the Hope College Dune Group, partnering with the Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences.
