Dr. K. Greg Murray is a retired faculty member (2021) of Hope College's Department of Biology, maintaining senior researcher status. He specializes in plant-animal interactions, tropical ecology, and community ecology, with a focus on pioneer plant dynamics in Costa Rican cloud forests. His research integrates fieldwork, mathematical modeling, and interdisciplinary collaborations with chemists and mathematicians. Murray taught courses ranging from introductory biology to advanced topics like mathematical biology and conservation biology, emphasizing field experience and curriculum innovation.
Education: PhD in Zoology (University of Florida, 1986), MS in Biology (California State University, 1980), BA in Biology (California State University, 1977). Awards include the T. Elliot Weier Professor of Plant Science endowed chair (2017). Notable grants include NSF-funded projects modeling tropical forest dynamics and studying seed bank chemistry. Collaborations span topics like seed dispersal, invasive species, and forest disturbance regimes.
Research highlights include decades of work on Monteverde Cloud Forest pioneer plants, chemical defenses in seeds, and the impact of seed predators on community structure. Post-retirement, he continues studies on West Michigan hemlock forests affected by insect infestations and Arizona conservation efforts. His work bridges ecology, mathematics, and chemistry to understand ecological processes and conservation challenges.
