Susanne Greenhalgh is an Honorary Research Fellow in Drama, Theatre, and Performance at the University of Roehampton, affiliated with the School of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. She previously served as Head of Ethics and Interdisciplinary Developments in the Department of Drama, Theatre, and Performance Studies. Her academic career includes a BA in English from Oxford University (where she was a Bertha Johnson Scholar), an MA from McGill University, and a PhD on ritual and ceremony in Shakespeare from Oxford. She also holds a PGCE in Drama from the Institute of Education, London University.
Her research focuses on reception studies, particularly Shakespeare’s adaptations across media (theatre, screen, and mass media), and explores themes like terror representation, death and mourning, and childhood staging. She has organized international conferences on topics such as Shakespeare and children, Renaissance studies, and has curated performances like the British premiere of Anne Carson's Decreation. Her grants include a British Academy award for radio Shakespeare research and an AHRC fellowship for studies on Shakespeare’s domestic reception.
- Teaching: Courses included adaptation studies, Shakespeare on stage/screen, classical Greek/Roman theatre, feminist theory, and war-related theatre.
- Administration: Roles included membership in the University Ethics Committee and Dance/Drama RSDB.
She has supervised PhDs on diverse topics, including Ibsen’s metatheatre, feminist performance art, and Sufi living in Turkey. Currently, she directs a PhD on combat trauma in ancient Greece. Professional affiliations include the British Shakespeare Association and the Shakespeare Association of America.
