Peter Holland is the McMeel Family Professor in Shakespeare Studies and Concurrent Professor of English at the University of Notre Dame, where he also serves as Associate Dean for the Arts. His academic trajectory includes prior roles as Judith E. Wilson Reader in Drama and Theatre at Cambridge University and Director of the Shakespeare Institute at the University of Birmingham.
Holland's research spans Shakespeare on stage and screen, textual editing, and theatre history, with particular emphasis on cognitive approaches to performance memory and cultural reception. His work bridges literary scholarship with performance studies, examining Shakespeare's evolution across historical and contemporary contexts.
Recent publications like Shakespeare and Forgetting (2021) reveal a sustained focus on memory theory and cognitive frameworks in Shakespearean studies, while his editorial leadership in major series has fundamentally shaped the discipline's methodological approaches.
Holland's recognition includes:
