Susanne Baer is a Professor of Public Law and Gender Studies at Humboldt University Berlin and holds visiting positions at the London School of Economics (Centennial Professor) and the University of Michigan (Lea Bates Global Law Professor). She previously served as a Justice of Germany’s Federal Constitutional Court (2011–2023) and has held leadership roles, including Vice-President of Humboldt University. Her research focuses on constitutionalism, gender studies, anti-discrimination law, and legal sociology. She has authored over 150 publications and received honorary doctorates from multiple institutions. Baer directs the Humboldt Law Clinic for Fundamental and Human Rights and co-founded the Law and Society Institute Berlin.
Education:法学博士 (Frankfurt), LL.M. (University of Michigan), habilitation (Humboldt University). Honors include membership in Academia Europaea and the British Academy. She has pioneered gender mainstreaming in German academia and led projects on equality impact assessments and climate litigation. Her recent work explores postcategorical anti-discrimination frameworks and the role of courts in addressing systemic inequalities.
Research emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to law, feminist jurisprudence, and the intersection of law with societal structures. Her articles address constitutional challenges, judicial independence, and legal responses to social hierarchies. Awards include the Walter Kolb Memorial Prize and the Caroline von Humboldt Professorship.
