Prof. Dr. Susanna Burghartz is an Emerita Professor of Renaissance and Early Modern History at the University of Basel, affiliated with both the Department of History (Faculty of Humanities) and the Institute for European Global Studies. She holds a part-time position following her 50% Brückenprofessur appointment at the Institute for European Global Studies since 2017. Her research focuses on urban societies, material culture, gender history, and early globalization.
Education: PhD (1988) and Habilitation (1997) from the University of Basel, specializing in criminality, gender relations, and marital dynamics in Early Modern Europe.
Research Interests: She explores topics such as consumption patterns in the 18th century, digital historiography, and the history of Basel’s global economic networks. Notable works include co-authored analyses of the Sandgrube estate and studies on veiling practices in Protestant cities.
Recent Publications Highlight: Her 2021 book on the Sandgrube examines Basel’s global economic ties, while her 2021 article on veiling in Basel and Zurich interrogates gendered material culture.
Awards & Roles: Served as Vice President of the Swiss Science Council (2020–present), held fellowships at the University of Warwick and Cambridge, and contributed to academic commissions like ‘infoclio.ch’.
