Aline Johner

Aline Johner is a SNSF Ambizione Fellow at the Department of History, University of Basel, Switzerland. Her research focuses on gender history, religious identity, and political mobilization in 19th-century French-speaking Switzerland.

Her work explores intersections of sexuality, religious affiliations, and political identities in pre-modern and modern European societies. She has published extensively on topics such as gendered religion in the Valais Alps, birth control practices in 19th-century Payerne, and political polarization during the Restoration period.

Recent publications (2023-2025) analyze how amateur practices and social networks shaped knowledge development in French-speaking Switzerland. Her research also spans early modern Eurasian histories and gendered perspectives on war.
