Susanna Burghartz is a Full Professor of Early Modern History at the University of Basel (since 2005) and affiliated with the European Institute of the University of Basel (EIB). She holds a PhD (1988) and Habilitation (1997) from the University of Basel, focusing on criminality in late medieval Zurich and gender dynamics in early modern Basel. Her research spans early globalization, urban societies, gender history, digital history, and material culture. She has held prestigious roles such as Beaufort Visiting Fellow (2016) and is a member of the Swiss Science Council (since 2020).
Education:
- 1976–1983: Studies in History, Philosophy, and Economics at Universities of Freiburg, Bonn, and Basel.
- 1988: PhD on criminality in late medieval Zurich.
- 1997: Habilitation on gender relations in early modern Basel.
Research Interests: Dr. Burghartz explores early global networks, material culture, and gender history, with a focus on Basel's role in early capitalism. Her work bridges micro-historical analysis with transregional perspectives, leveraging digital methods to study objects and identities. Recent projects include studies on the de Bry family’s global projects and early modern veiling practices.

- Co-founder of the international Arbeitskreis for gender history in early modernity (1994–2002).
