Prof. Dr. Carola Jäggi holds the Chair of Medieval Art History and Archaeology of the Early Christian, High and Late Middle Ages at the University of Zurich's Institute of Art History. She served as Head of the Institute from 2016-2020. Her academic trajectory includes positions at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg, TU Berlin, and University of Basel.
Education:
Studied art history, classical archaeology, Christian archaeology, medieval archaeology, and ethnology (1982-1988) at universities of Basel, Zurich, Freiburg im Breisgau, and Bonn.
Research Focus:
Specializes in sacred architecture across historical periods, with emphasis on:
- Liturgical furnishings and spatial organization
- Impact of religious transformations on material culture
- Sacralization processes in built environments
- Reuse practices in late antique and medieval contexts
Awards & Fellowships:
- Max Planck Society Dissertation Fellowship (1990-1992)
- Swiss National Science Foundation Habilitation Grant (1997-2000)
Administrative Leadership: Directed archaeological excavations at Gerasa's early Christian cathedral (Jordan) and leads ongoing projects documenting medieval churches of Rome and Zurich's art monuments.
