Susan Zurbrigg is a Professor of Art and head of the Painting and Drawing area at James Madison University's School of Art, Design and Art History. She previously served as Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the College of Visual and Performing Arts. With an M.F.A. from Indiana University and B.A. from Bard College, her artistic practice explores vibrant oil painting abstractions that represent liminal spaces in the context of interracial African American identity.
Her activism includes leadership roles in JMU's diversity initiatives and the College Art Association's Committee on Diversity Practices. She co-curated the Exuberance: Dialogues in African American Abstract Painting exhibition at JMU's Duke Hall Gallery and leads Harrisonburg's Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation initiative.
