Susan W. McGraugh is a Professor and Director of the Criminal Defense Clinic at Saint Louis University School of Law. She holds a B.A. from Drake University (1985) and a J.D. from Washington University in St. Louis School of Law (1988). Her career spans criminal defense advocacy, public defense, and policy work, with a focus on indigent, homeless, and mentally ill clients. She has served as a trial attorney in the Missouri State Public Defender's Office, created the Legal Services Clinic at St. Patrick’s Center, and directed the Restorative Justice Program to abolish the death penalty for mentally disabled defendants.

Her research and advocacy emphasize gaps in legal representation for marginalized groups, particularly those facing municipal violations without counsel. She teaches courses like Criminal Defense Advocacy, Trial Ad II, and Externship Clinic, while networking with mental health providers to expand representation. Her work integrates clinical education with social justice, enabling pro bono advocacy and mentorship of future attorneys.
Notably, she advocates for systemic reforms to ensure access to legal counsel for all, including those in municipal courts. Her community service includes roles as a provisional municipal judge and collaboration with the Catholic Legal Assistance Ministry.
